Kamasi Washington at the Opera House
Afrofuturist Kamasi Washington Returns to the Opera House With Double-Disc Heaven and Earth in Hand
Widely hailed as a modern jazz visionary, Los Angeles’ genius tenor saxophonist Kamasi Washington is set to make his triumphant return to the Sydney Opera House. Cementing his status alongside the likes of jazz legends and Opera House alumni Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Sonny Rollins, get set for an intimate, in-the-round Concert Hall performance drawing on his latest masterpiece, the epic double-disc Heaven and Earth that Pitchfork hailed as “the strongest statement of his career”.
An Afrofuturist virtuoso expanding the possibilities of the art form, Washington blew up on the strength of his triple-album opus The Epic in 2015, alongside collaborations with Flying Lotus, Snoop Dogg, Run the Jewels, jazz legends Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, and his unforgettable contributions to Kendrick Lamar’s Grammy-winning breakthrough, To Pimp a Butterfly, which established him as a vital, passionate voice of a movement. His mind-blowing performances, infusing freeform jazz, funk, and hip-hop grooves with the cosmic spirit of Pharoah Sanders and Sun Ra, have taken him to headlining slots at Coachella, Glastonbury and Fuji Rock in crossover ways not seen since Miles Davis.
Joined on stage with his 8 piece band, Washington’s in-the-round performances — at once deeply spiritual, mind-bendingly cosmic and fiercely visceral — make for a bold vision of a musical future that you absolutely do not want to miss.
