Homeground: Free Outdoor Event

Did you know that the land that Sydney Opera House is built on, traditionally known as Tubowghule, now known as Bennelong Point, was for thousands of years a gathering place for the Gadigal and Eora people who danced and sang here.

This November, in this historic place, Homeground celebrates the very best Indigenous artists from Australia and around the world. Join us to share First Nations music, dance and culture over two fantastic, family friendly days.

Homeground is wonderful festival experience, with music and dance stages, arts market and a multitude of food and drink options to keep you energised throughout the day.

Enjoy the Homeground Arts Market and workshops or while away the afternoon and evening with friends or family. Join us as we celebrate the power of these contemporary artists and ancient customs under the sun and stars, framed by the sails of the Opera House.
Witness the very first Dance Rites competition – a new national initiative we’re very proud to present – bringing communities from across Australia together to share and demonstrate cultural reclamation practices.

The festival has many parts but three main features are the Music stage, the sand circle (dance) and the Homeground Arts Market.

The music stage will feature Archie Roach & Friends, Oka, A Tribe Called Red and more. The sand circle is holding the inaugural Dance Rites competition as well as a number of First Nations dance troupes and the Homeground Arts Market will feature a range of Indigenous communities selling their wares and running workshops for kids and families. We have artists coming in nations all over the world, Australia, Canada, Fijian Islands, Pacific Islands, Rotuma, Tibet and the Torres Strait Islands.

I believe that the Arts have enormous capacity to ignite imagination, emotion, and touch the soul. Homeground is the place to dive into the many interconnected histories, music, dance, stories and food that our First Nations have to offer.

I look forward to welcoming you to the festival – please say hello!

– Rhoda Roberts, Head of Indigenous Programming, Sydney Opera House
