Hothouse Presents: Jazz at The Basement
Hothouse Presents: a monthly Jazz series at The Basement Sydney with the latest and greatest in the scene! For the third instalment of Hothouse Presents, Michelle Nicolle and Paul Williamson.
“I have loved Michelle Nicolle’s singing perpetually and without ceasing since first I heard her [in 1998]. Michelle is a singer born to charm, enlighten and seduce through music. I only wish she lived in the States somewhere so I could manage to hear her more often.” Kurt Elling 2012
Mo Award 2001, 2003 & 2004, National Jazz Award (1998) winner and A.R.I.A Finalist 2001, 2004, 2009 Michelle Nicolle is a jazz musician whose chosen instrument is Voice. She is undoubtedly one of the most talented, creative and original jazz voices this country has ever produced.
For the last 15 years the Michelle Nicolle Quartet has been Michelle’s main baby, with seven CD releases and touring extensively throughout Australia and internationally. In May she was invited to sing with Kurt Elling and the MSO for the Melbourne International Jazz Festival .
Yet while at home in Melbourne, Michelle has been lucky enough to lead a regular local trio gig for 8 years – The Brunswick Green – with legendary saxophonist Paul Williamson. Every Thursday they play jazz requests all night and have a blast, and all without a chord player in sight!
Michelle and Paul are bringing a little of The Brunny G to Sydney with the most happening rhythm section anywhere: Jonathan Zwartz and Hamish Stuart and they’ll be taking familiar songs to places before unknown!
