INTERVIEW WITH IRVIN MAYFIELD – Jammin Thursday
Thursday Jammin’ presenter Anita Pollard spoke with New Orleans artistic director and trumpeter Irvin Mayfield, who will be coming to Australia this June to play concerts with jazz vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater and his Grammy award-winning 18-piece ensemble, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra (NOJO).
At 37, Irvin Mayfield is not only heavily involved with the jazz music education of New Orleans youth, he has recorded 15 albums, and is a Grammy award winner. (For the Album ‘Book One’ with the NOJO – 2010 Awarded for Best Large Jazz Ensemble). Mayfield is also a professor and a doctor and serves on many of the city’s boards. He was appointed by Barack Obama to the National Council on the Arts.
The interview begins when Anita Pollard tells Irvin Mayfield how impressive his achievements are for someone of his age. He replies:
