Maqueque (pronounced Mah-KEH-keh), is an all-female sextet that blends Afro-Cuban, Soul and Jazz. The band features Jane Bunnett on flute and soprano sax, Yissy García on the drums, vocalist Daymé Arocena, pianist Dánae Olano, Celia Jimenez on the bass, and percussionist Magdelys Savigne.

Arocena’s grandmother, who practices the Afro-Cuban Yorùbá religion, provided the band’s name. It means “the spirit of a young girl”, perfectly capturing the essence of the group. Bunnett says she imagine she was like that as a ten-year-old girl.. “I was very energetic, I could be sweet and I could be feisty. That’s Maqueque.”

“…Bunnett integrates her flute and soprano sax into the Cubans’ music, giving us the best of the past and the contemporary.” – JazzTimes
