Australian Jazz at it’s very best!

The Jazz Action Society is proud to present an unmissable night featuring the famous Errol Buddle Quintet live!

The Errol Buddle Jazz Quintet is comprised of multi-instrumentalist Errol Buddle, Ed Wilson on trombone and vocals, Marie Steinway on piano and vocals, Noel Mason on bass, and Toby Hall on drums.

——————–

Errol Buddle is one of Australia’s most successful jazz exports. After fronting a band in the 1950s which included Elvin Jones and Tommy Flanagan, he then led the Australian Jazz Quintet to the astonishing heights of accompanying Billie Holiday and Carmen MacRae. They played Carnegie Hall and became one of the five most popular jazz acts in America. Errol frequently featured in the Downbeat polls for tenor saxophone and in miscellaneous instruments for the bassoon, which he pioneered in jazz to startling effect. He plays oboe and most of the saxophone, clarinet, and flute families.

Ed Wilson is known from his days with the legendary Daly/Wilson Big Band famous for their thrilling live shows around Australia. Also a well accomplished arranger, his publishing company sell his arrangements direct to schools all over the country.

Maree Steinway has been playing a wide array of jazz styles in all of Sydney’s popular jazz venues since the mid 80’s.  She began to acquire international recognition for her piano playing and string arrangements which were recorded with artists on the La Brava Music Label.

Noel Mason is one of Sydney’s bass stars. He studied at The Sydney Conservatorium of Music Jazz Unit and has since then played with James Morrision Quintet, John Morrison’s Swing City, The Comedy Garage House Band, and many other Sydney bands.

Drummer Toby Hall has played and recorded with outstanding Australian improvisers including Mike Nock, Lloyd Swanton, Bernie McGann, Alister Spence, and Sandy Evans as well as leading his own groups. He has also played with many visiting performers including jazz vocal legend Sheila Jordan. Montreal Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, New York’s famous Knitting Factory – Toby’s been there, done that.
