Jazz in Sydney: Coming Out of the Underground?

Foundry 616 opened its doors as Sydney’s newest jazz club in 2013.  Five years previously, the club’s founder, Peter Rechniewski, published a book, titled the Permanent Underground, in which he argued that fundamental changes would be needed in the way that jazz is funded, administered and presented in Australia if it is to have a long term future.  Mick Paddon interviewed Peter at his club, to ask what, if anything, has changed in the five years since he wrote the book and to find out about the challenges and rewards in opening a jazz venue in Sydney.
