JOBRIATH A.D. 2012 “He out-queened Queen”

The True Fairy of Rock & Roll.

Dubbed the true fairy of rock ‘n’ roll, he out-queened Queen and was hailed the new David Bowie, but despite massive billboards in Time Square, major label backing and a Cecil B. DeMillesque marketing plan, world domination didn’t eventuate. It seems the world wasn’t ready for glam-rock’s first unambiguously-gay androgyne in 1973, when Pennsylvanian escapee Bruce Campbell burst on to stage in the first of many outrageous get-ups. Fresh from the cast of Hair and wielding a new Thorian monicker, “lost god” JOBRIATH experienced a meteoric rise to obscurity lasting less that two years, yet he continues to inspire – Morrissey being one long-time outspoken fan. Now director Kieran Turner spotlights Jobriath’s unique life story in Jobriath A.D. – a documentary showcasing his music, his “reptilian and oleaginous” manager, fantastic footage and interviews/cameos with Soft Cell‘s Marc Almond and Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters amongst many others. Narrated by Henry Rollins, this is the tragi-comedy of a glam-god who fell to earth… and then kept falling. Did he really end up living in a pyramid on the roof of the infamous Chelsea Hotel before he sadly died in 1983? Is that Richard Gere in the choir? Find out at our exclusive screening.

Along with all the fantastic footage, Jobriath A.D. features: Marc Almond [Soft Cell], DJ Ann Magnuson [N.Y.s Mudd Club], Gloria Jones [‘Tainted Love’], Jayne County [‘Are You Man Enough To Be A Woman’], Kristian Hiffman [The Mumps], Jake Shears [Scissor Sisters], Joseph Arias [Andy Warhol circle], Henry RollinsHeather McRae {‘Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Sex’], Stephen Merritt [The Magnetic Fields], Jac Holzman [Elektra/Nonesuch], Justin Tranter [Semi Precious Weapons], and gay activist Jim Fouratt.

“A superbly presented portrait of a figure once thought irretrievably lost,
it’s worth noting how visually arresting this film is, with copious, fascinating footage.”
[Mojo Magazine]

“In this fantastically revelatory documentary by Kieran Turner, Jobriath has been thoroughly rehabilitated: as a charismatic performer in his own right, the unwitting victim of record-industry hubris, and an unlikely, reluctant martyr for gay rights..”
[The Guardian]
