Joseph Tawadros – Chameleons Of The White Shadow
Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is Chameleons Of The White Shadow by Joseph Tawadros.
Recent ARIA winner for Best World Music album, Joseph Tawadros’ latest release reminds us why he won the accolade.
The Australian/Egyptian oud player has teamed up with a glittering array of international talent including banjoist Bela Fleck, vibraphonist Roy Ayers, organist Joey DeFrancesco and electric bassist Richard Bona.
With such an eclectic selection of instruments from a group of artists whose styles and genres range extensively, to create a cohesive sound would have undoubtedly proven a surmountable challenge for Joseph. Indeed you would be forgiven for thinking that Joseph may have been a little over ambitious with his selected group. However those thoughts are totally washed away upon listening to Chameleons oF The White Shadow, and the challenge was not only one that Joseph mastered with astounding success, it seems that he and all the artists excelled and relished in the experience.
Joseph’s north African folk sound lightly fuses with elements of jazz and funk to create a quite unique experience on Chameleons of The White Shadow. The breadth of music is incredibly engaging, with more traditional Tawadros sounds like ‘Time As Place’ totally juxtaposed by like tracks like ‘Gypo Blues’ offering an eclectic blues/funk/world explosion. The whole album is a true celebration of fusion music.
