“Juan of the Dead” at the 7th Sydney Latin American Film Festival

How many bad zombie movies are out there? How refreshing that “Juan of the Dead” is not one of them.
Juan, the protagonist, makes his living as a small-time criminal in post-revolutionary Cuba. Although most of the young people (including his daughter) want to leave their mother country due to anarchic conditions and the low living standard, he is quietly satisfied with his life: “This is paradise and nothing gonna change that.” Too soon, however, this proves a misapprehension…
As the ominous epidemic, announced on public television, turns out to be a zombie invasion, Juan’s whole life turns upside down. Calling himself a survivor, Juan decides to stay in his paradise to fight back. Together with a small group of others he opens a business, making money for killing the undead. “Juan of the Dead, we kill your beloved ones, what can I do for you?” becomes his new slogan.
“Juan of the Dead” spices the often-done zombie theme up with its dark humor as well as with its hilarious dialogues and characters. Apart from that, the film reflects the Cuban life in a self-deprecating way. This is why the movie really deserves every single reward it gained. “Juan of the Dead” is an absolute must-see for anybody disliking zombie movies – because it will change your mind.
