Kim Sinh & Dom Turner – Two Days In Hanoi
Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is Two Days In Hanoi by Kim Sinh & Dom Turner.
Some of you may have heard or seen the latest Eastside slogan ‘Discover the Evolution of the Blues,’ the poster of which depict as a man with a trumpet for vocal chords which leads down to his heart shaped as Africa. Indeed there is no doubt that the roots of blues music lie in the traditional sounds from West Africa. Yet on Two Days in Hanoi, what we could be seeing is the next stage of the evolution of the blues.
Backsliders’ guitarist Dom Turner has had a long lasting fascination of Vietnamese music, and in 2008 he teamed up with revered Vietnamese musician Kim Sinh after previously meeting him on a radio interview in Australia.
Recorded in an intense two day session, Kim Sinh and Dom Turner were also joined on vocals by Sinh’s daughter Kim Ngoc. The result is a fascinating blend of the mesmerising Vietnamese Cai Luong style and smoky steel blues music. Turner’s electric blues guitar skills fuse seamlessly with Kim Sinh’s traditional Vietnamese guitar and lute picking. This is an experiment that could quite easily of gone pear shaped, blending two genres that have little history together, and thus it is even further testament to the artists instrumentation skills that the album flows with such liquidity.
A bold and prodigious release, Two Days in Hanoi will appeal to blues, roots and world music fans alike, and particularly to those who are fans of highly intricate instrumentation.
