Kingfisha – Kingfisha

Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is the self-titled release from Kingfisha.

Kingfisha are a five piece band hailing Brisbane that have been touring Australia and been on the festival circuit for some five years now. That period has seen the band win various underground music awards and this, their self-titled debut album, is set to see the Brisbane lot achieve further success.

Their style is perhaps more akin to a New Zealand band rather than an Australian, influences from bands such as Katchafire and The Black Seeds are undoubtedly apparent, yet at the same time Kingfisha’s twist of  Jamaican influenced dub and reggae rhythms gives the album a definite Aussie feel. Smooth vocals, easy melodies and addictive hooks at times conjure up impressions of an easy surf lifestyle. There are shifts in moods too, at times ambient psychedelia leads one to a state of Byron styled tripping, before energetic kicks and chorus lines up the pace and have your hips shaking. The whole release has been superbly produced and is an overall hypnotic and lusciously addictive experience.
