Long + Salty

Last week on Something Else, Joel and Rhys chewed the fat with Lisa Eisman & Adam Szudrich, directors at this year’s Short + Sweet short play festival.

Despite veering briefly into the unchartered conversational territories of orgasming grandmothers, Lisa and Adam had some very interesting insights into the festival, and theatre in general. Lisa’s play this year is called 2 Countand she had some solid advice for anyone attempting a dramatic short play: good script + good actors = good play. Adam’s play Enough Hair is a comedy, which lead us to talk about the competitive difference between comedy and drama in what is, of course, a fight to the top.

Competition is tough, as is the 10 minute time restriction. In Adam’s words ”It’s in, out, and if you’re over 10 minutes; you’re cut” but luckily, the festival will be slightly more lenient this year as they have added a 1 minute buffer. This is made even more difficult by the fact that 9 other plays will be performed that night.

Throughout the 8 week festival, 160 different plays will be performed, and standing out from the crowd is a must. Adam and Lisa have their own strategies for doing this, including on-stage nudity, but to find out the rest, download and listen to the podcast!

Cheers,

Joel and Rhys
