Lou Millar – A LIVE PERFORMANCE

On last week’s segment, Louise Millar, a 21 year old singer/songwriter came into the studio to talk about her music and also poetry.  This 21 year old Sydney based singer-songwriter and poet, rides somewhere along the folk/soul/acoustic vein; influenced by the likes of Laura Marling, Justin Vernon , Portishead, Patti Smith and Feist. A wholehearted endorser of strange melodies, vocal harmonies and plucked guitar layers, she is definitely a very special artist.

She played on the Something Else segment two original songs then covered one of Feist’s songs, who is a very big influence on Lou Millar. Lou says she draws inspiration from the everyday – whether its her own personal life journeys or the journeys of her family and close friends.

Not only is she a killer singer but also a bit of poet too. She has had her works featured inVoiceworks, a national, quaterly magazine that features fresh new writings by Australian young writers. It’s a unique opportunity for young writers and artists to publish, short stories, articles and comics as well as getting some good ol’ feedback. She has had already had one of her works featured in Voiceworks, and in this issue will have to pieces published in this distinct magazine.

Not only that but her last published poem won her a prize for the John Marsden Prize.

Lou also played at the Soul Food and Ambient Music Festival in Katoomba along side Golden Orb and some other great folk and alternative artist, and aside from that, Lou has been to a few Art Parties held by Jessie Ray, that celebrate the alternate artists and art forms within the inner west of Sydney.

Juggling both music and poetry whilst studying at the University of Sydney, I’m hoping Sydney gets to see a lot more of her in 2013.
