Mace Francis New York Nonet – Land Speed Record
Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is Land Speed Record by The Mace Francis New York Nonet.
Perth based composer Mace Francis is a man who likes his big projects. Renowned for his compositions with big jazz bands, Land Speed Record sees the composer part ways from his familiar territory and instead turns to lead nine of New York’s finest musicians.
Land Speed Record came to fruition after Mace and New York Saxophonist Jon Gordon met in Perth whilst Jon was studying there. After performing together at The Ellington Jazz Club, the seeds were sown for future work together.
Recorded live over a two day session in Brooklyn last year, the Nonet that bring Mace’s music to life are Jon Gordon on alto saxophone, Dan Pratt on tenor saxophone, Douglas Yates on bass clarinet, Mat Jodrell on trumpet, Alan Ferber on trombone, Nate Radley on guitar, Sean Wayland on piano, Matt Clohesy on bass and Mark Ferber on drums. The result after a smooth recording session is a free expression of experimental jazz music as each player adapts to various musical situations. Moods shift from sombre moments to energetic crescendos, many of which occur in each individual track as Mace proves himself further as a man who has a profound ability to portray various impressions and expressions through his compositions.
