Mark Lockett – Sneaking Out After Midnight

Eastside Radio’s Album Of The Week is Sneaking Out After Midnight by Mark Lockett

This is the fourth album from the New Zealand born but now Melbourne based drummer and also features the talents of New York based musicians Joel Frahm (Saxophone) and Orlando Le Fleming (Bass).

Where Mark’s previous album Now And Then was a set of interpretations of the works of Ornette Coleman, Sneaking Out After Midnight is a set of all original compositions, all but two of which are by Mark. Recorded in New York, there is an undisputable Manhattan feel to the music. Classically inspired, Sneaking Out After Midnight is a collection of free Jazz with elements of swing that would not feel out of place on the prestigious HighNote record label. The sound is open and unrestrained, clean cut but not predictable.

The interconnection between the trio is intricate and vibrant as they both smoothly and acutely play off one and other. Indeed if sceptics still remain out there of the compositional ability of Jazz drummers, Mark Lockett is certainly doing his part to banish that idea.

Sneaking Out After Midnight is a release by Rattle Jazz. For more information go to marklockett.com.au
