Mulatu Astatke & The Black Jesus Experience

Jazz Rooms proudly presents the Sydney return of Mulatu Astatke following 2 storming sell outs in 2010.

Mulatu is known as the godfather of Ethio-Jazz – the infectious music dating back to the 1960s that combines Afro Jazz, Soul and Funk with traditional Ethiopian harmony. One of Ethiopia’s funkiest musicians of the 70s, Mulatu Astatke’s distinct brand of music feature some of the most soulful hip-grinding instrumentals ever recorded in Mother Africa.

Mulatu again joins forces with Melbourne-based Black Jesus Experience who backed him in his last Australian tour – a collaboration that led onto performances together at this years Glastonbury and Big Chill Festivals. The BJE are a nine-piece ensemble that bring together a dynamic blend of Ethiopian music with jazz, funk and hip hop. Members include singer/songwriters from Ethiopia, Namibia & Zimbabwe, with rhythm and horn sections from Australia, New Zealand and Ethiopia.

Support comes from Sydney based Afro Funk powerhouse The Liberators. This 9 piece have steadily built themselves a following on the back of their recent album release for the Record Kicks label and well received live shows.

Russ Dewbury provides the Jazz Rooms DJ soundtrack connecting cutting edge dance vibrations from all strands of black music past present and future. With a firm emphasis on dance floor energy, expect full on genre crossing club sessions with special guest Toon (Eastside Radio).

Expect a magical night of Afro Jazz and Funk grooves in the company of a universally admired music legend.
