Musica Viva’s 75th Anniversary

75 years of Making Australia a More Musical Place, in Concert!

The 2020 season marks Musica Viva’s 75th anniversary, and is the last that I have the privilege of sculpting before we welcome my successor, Paul Kildea.

I wanted to mark such an exceptional confluence with the most inspiring international talent I could find bolstered by a high concentration of Australian content – our best chamber musicians plus new music from some of our country’s composers whom I most admire.

The year springs open with the classic flair of American pianist Garrick Ohlsson.

Legendary recital partners, violinist Cho-Liang Lin and pianist Jon Kimura Parker, make their first joint tour of Australia.

Pianist Piers Lane and his dear friends the Goldner String Quartet celebrate the Quartet’s 25 years of brilliance.

Oboist Diana Doherty joins forces with the Eggner Trio in a virtuoso combination of timbres and tones.

The ‘world’s reigning male chorus’, American vocal group Chanticleer make their debut in Australia, while Germany’s Goldmund Quartet bring their fresh, unpretentious approach to classic repertoire.

The season closes with Baroque splendour from Christophe Rousset’s French period ensemble, Les Talens Lyriques, appearing with soprano Siobhan Stagg.

Throughout the year there is new music from Paul Stanhope, Jakub Jankowski, Lachlan Skipworth, Clare Maclean and Elizabeth Younan.

The past 19 years have been an extraordinary journey for me. From the outset the dedication of Musica Viva’s audiences restored my faith in the importance of classical music to our social landscape.

I have held tight to principles of excellence since then, and trust that my choices over the years have in some way repaid that debt.
