Newtopia, the Newtown Festival is on this Sunday
This Sunday, Camperdown Memorial Park is turning into Newtopia, the annual Newtown Festival held to raise money for the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre. There’s plenty going on to draw you out of hibernation after a week of rain – enter the Miss Newtopia competition, or the Dog Show, or perhaps you just want to check out the amazing lineup of local bands.
The lineup this year is impressive – even for a festival such as Newtown which has a reputation for hosting the hottest new acts. Sure you’ve got Jinja Safari headlining, but have you had a chance to check out the electro-soul of Yum Yum, reggae/roots grooves from The Strides or the exciting voice and songwriting talent of Okenyo?

Or perhaps words are more you thing? Then get down to the Writers’ Tent or if it’s all about the visual, head down to The Live Art Hub to check out some local artists.
Man’s best friend isn’t forgotten, with a dog show with a difference. Whether your dog bears a striking resemblance to a celeb, or perhaps is always first to fetch that stick, the Newtown Dog Show is for you, registration is at 9am and all dogs entered get a prize.
Food will be supplied by a variety of Newtown’s finest restaurants and of course Young Henry’s will be supplying the beer.
The Details
Starts 9:00am, Finishes 6:00pm
Transport: It’s Newtown, so parking is scarce. If you can, use public transport; or even better, cycle. There’s free Cycle Valet Parking at the festival!
Cost: Suggested $5 donation. $10 gets you express entry and a free stainless steel water bottle. (FYI the event has no bottled water for sale, so make sure you bring a bottle to fill up on site).
Access- Wheelchair uses will find that there are tarmac paths throughout the event, however it’s a park, so they’re not pristine (remember, it’s a park). It also gets quite crowded around lunchtime, so if you aren’t the most mobile, or will be attending with a companion animal, i suggest getting there a bit earlier in the day so you can have a meander about, then find a position to enjoy the music.
There will be volunteers on site who will be more than happy to assist anyone needing help.
No BYO Alcohol. Alcohol will be sold onsite.
