One Day More at the Italian Film Festival in Sydney

If you are not only in love with Italy as a country but also with its movies, the Italian Film Festival will be just the right thing for you. It is the biggest one in the world outside Italy, presenting various movies in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth as well as Sydney. One Day More is one of the films selected for the audience Down Under. Even with the Australian Premiere taking place already within the festival, there are more screenings available  in different cinemas.

“If couples were financial products, they’d be high-risk investments,” states forty-year-old Giacomo. This Italian is very satisfied with his lifestyle, while his mother is more than upset about his refuse to marry. As revenge for his irresponsible behavior during their relationship, one of his numerous girlfriends dumps his car keys into a canal. This small incident changes Giacomos whole life as it sets a chain of events in motion. Taking public transport to get to work was definitely one of the last things Giacomo ever wanted to experience. Surprisingly his bus trips turn into the best part of his days as they are brightened up by a woman standing next to him every morning. As the days pass Giacomo feels himself more and more attracted to the beautiful stranger but for the first time of his life he is afraid to make the first move.

Eventually the woman walks up to him, asking him out for a coffee. Giacomo thinks his dreams have come true at last, but only to find out that Michaela will depart to New York forever on the following day. Now it is up to Giacomo to decide what he really wants.

Massimo Venier’s enjoyable romcom is based on a bestselling novel by lead actor Fabio Volo (Weddings and Other Disasters). The film shows how a bachelor, being always happy about his lifestyle, comes to wonder if he has grown out of it. Even the viewer asks himself if it is possible to fall in love with a completely stranger from the first sighting especially as expectations can be proven wrong.

“One Day More” also deals with coincidents and how strongly they can affect a life. One simple action, the keys sinking to the ground of a canal, enables the whole love story to happen in the first place. It makes the viewer wonder if everything really is good for something and if there is always a deeper purpose to all happenings no matter how small they seem to be.

Although some happenings come across unrealistic and the plot is predictable, the film still is absolutely worth seeing. And by being honest to ourselves we have to admit that we even expect all those insecure, tragic and implausible things from a perfect love story.
