Oscar Jimenez (Single Launch) + Abuka Trio @ The Basement Thurs 24th

Known for his energetic and charismatic performances as the lead singer of the ARIA nominated band Watussi; Oscar Jimenez has now launched his first single ‘Isabela’ from his pre-album ‘Distancia.’ Having performed all around Australia and the world and having shared the stage with such artists of Santana, Los Van Van, Clube do Balanco and Manu Chao in his band of Watussi; Oscar has now flown himself into his own set of shows to launch his new single.

Originating from Columbia, Oscar’s music has the essential funky Latin grooves, with a soulful South American traditional sound. All his songs are inspired from his Columbian background, with his family memories telling the story in his lyrics. Singing in English, Spanish and Portuguese Oscar captivated his entire audience at The Basement on Thursday 24th May, by engaging our multicultural community. His set included uplifting songs that in his own words defined his musical journey and experience. He has lived in Australia for more then 10 years and expressed to everyone how multicultural our community is; and the way it evolved in his musical style and delivery.

The start of the night included the fantastic support act of Abuka Trio. Their 7 song set was based on their Brazilian jazz funk style where all their songs showed an extensive delivery of music. The trio of keys, guitar/vocals and percussion all delivered their own contribution to the piece; but the keys player definitely got everyone cheering. The husky vocals and dirty bass groove combined with the thumping percussion rhythms all combined together into everyone saying it was an excellent support act to start the already vibrant night! Not only were they asked for an encore of another original composition of theirs, but their staccato endings and abrupt introductions of their Latin jazz funk grooves got everyone in saying out loud ABUKA TRIO!

Following Abuka Trio with the main event of the night was of course Oscar Jimenez, who came on stage with a 5 piece band all ready to go. Everyone was ready for the excitement that Oscar and his band would deliver; the open empty dance floor also got us excited to see what we would be hearing to get us up on our feet. His first song ‘Como Te Queiro Papa’ (How I Love You Father) was a great start to his set list as it got everyone to be quiet and listen to his lyrics. Of course it abrupted like all Latin music at some stage, as the double bass line followed by the congas and percussion rhythm got several people already on their feet. His vocals came from a proud Latino and his lyrics were soulful and were based on his love for his family, life and music.

Another of his songs ‘Mi Vida’ (My Life) featured a special guest who played flamenco guitar. This not only expressed how much contrasting styles Oscar has in his album, but also displayed to everyone how many other musicians he has asked to be a part of his music. His album will defiantly be something to listen to. Another musical guest was the keys player from Abuka Trio playing the accordion and of course an awesome saxophone player. Oscar was expressive and everyone in the band was involved no matter who was playing. Backing vocalists came from all members of the band with body percussion when they weren’t playing. It really showed how great this band was together and how proud it made Oscar in his performance.

Overall his album launch at The Basement was very enjoyable with a fun care-free atmosphere where the Latin culture shown through to all those in the crowd.  For anyone who loves Latin music check out Oscar Jimenez touring around Sydney!
