Oscuro: Tango, Text and Imagery

Tángalo

Tángalo

The elegant, sensual Argentine Tango has had its devotees in Sydney for many years now. But now this secret art form is ready to step into the light, with a stunning multi-strand artistic event called Oscuro. This unique night will combine a photography and visual art exhibition (Shay Tobin), a book launch and interviews (Alistair Baillie), live sets of modern tango music (Tángalo), even a world-premiere tango-acrobatics show, along with a tango dancefloor where Sydney dancers won’t stop all evening.

The instigators of the event, Emily-Rose and Owen from Tángalo, and novelist Alistair, wanted this to be more than a book launch or a fundraiser, they felt that people deserved an “incredible event”, creating a space where everyone with an interest in the arts would find something inspiring. They combined their many talents, and brought in visual artist Shay Tobin, and the result is Oscuro. Tobin’s exhibition at Oscuro will explore concepts of trust, tango, darkness and relationships through mediums of photography and oils. Alistair Baillie will be launching his debut novel, Slander and Doubt, and giving an interview the audience is welcome to observe, in the chill out space, and Tángalo will be raising funds to support the recording of their upcoming studio album.

Since their debut performance of July 2011, Tángalo has fast become a favourite on the Australian Tango scene, performing for events such as The National Folk Festival, Made in Argentina Festival, Tango in the Spring and B.A.S.H. They have also performed in prestigious Sydney music venues such as The Basement, Blue Beat and created the very popular Tango evenings at the Camelot Lounge. Whilst Tángalo plays a wide array of music, ‘golden-age’ repertoire is often featured beside a growing number of original compositions, and it is an important aspect of Tángalo’s musical craft that much of the repertoire performed is still music that is ‘danceable’.

There will be a pop-up bar, and a range of both quiet and lively areas. The beautiful wooden dance floor of the Simon Leadley Room at Trackdown Studios in the Moore Park Entertainment quarter has the space for everyone to show off their style. So dress in your finest and move to the sounds first of DJ Para los Tangueros, and then the live, feature performances from Tángalo. The artists want the audience to feel free to express themselves, so the dress code is “anything goes”. Emily-Rose sees this as the ultimate Friday night event, “where people can leave all the worries of the week, and enter a wonderland of art, history and tango.”
