PENTATONIX – BRINGING A CAPPELLA TO POPCULTURE

Listening to Pentatonix is a real taste of Honey

Every Thursday from 9-10:30am, we have the pleasure to listen to the fantastic tracks played by Stuart Rubin. In his show A Taste of Honey, he is keen to offer a diversity, mixing up new and good old songs. Rubin’s intention is to spread good music, no matter what origin or which period of time. A Taste of Honey explores great songs, especially of the twentieth century by original and contemporary artists. Every week bringing up something special.

A striking example of the music he plays is the a cappella band Pentatonix, originating from Arlington, Texas. A five member group based around the idea of reproducing many different, famous songs (for example from Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Macklemore, Disclosure etc.) by giving them their own special touch. Petatonix shines with its extraordinary voices and sound effects, unique compositions which add something different to every track, sometimes in the form of medleys and some original material. Most importantly, through their strong presence of low bass vocals, and their diverse range of vocal percussion, they bring accapella, often seen as old-fashioned, to a completely new level.

Scott, Mitch, Avi, Kevin and the only female vocalist Kirstin form together the a cappella quintet. Created in 2011, Pentatonix became well-known after winning the third season of the TV a cappella casting show Sing-Off. Since then, they developed several albums. They also made effective use of social media to interact with their fan base. Having now gained 7.28 million subscribers and more than 785 million cumulative views, the PTXofficial YouTube page is currently the 12th most subscribed-to music channel and the 42nd most subscribed channel overall. Pentatonix also received a nomination at the 57th Grammy Awards in the Best Arrangement, Instrumental and a cappella category for “Daft Punk”. 2015, they fulfilled their dream, winning the first Grammy in the category Best Arrangement, Instrumental Or A Cappella.

It’s worth checking them out on their website. For more musical inspiration, not only about Pentatonix, turn up A Taste of Honey, 9am every Thursday at EastsideFM, or replay via our Program Guide anytime.
