Piano legend Jon Cleary to play one show only at the Basement!
Lovers of piano, check this out. New Orleans ‘Piano Professor’ Jon Cleary will be performing a special one-off show at The Basement next week on Thursday November 1 in support of his new album, ‘Occapella’.
Born in England and bred in New Orleans, Jon Cleary is a triple threat, combining soulful vocals, masterful piano skills, and a knack for composing infectious grooves with melodic hooks and sharp lyrics.
Avid fans are sure to be aware of the various projects and groups that Cleary has been involved in; some of the more notable highlights of his career have been playing with the likes of Dr. John, Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal and John Scofield.
‘Occapella’ is effectively a set of songs by Allen Toussaint – both famous and obscure – combining a jazz concept record with a creative, funky attitude.
”The challenge was to take each song and do a flip on it in some respect”, Cleary says of ‘Occapella’. This he has done with a great sense of fun, “flexing various musical muscles using Toussaint’s songs as the raw material.”
Though playing most of the instruments himself, Cleary has enlisted some of New Orleans’ greatest musicians; including members from his band ‘The Absolute Monster Gentlemen’ featuring guitarist Derwin “Big D” Perkins, bassist Cornell Williams and drummer Jeffrey “Jellybean” Alexander. It also features James Singleton, Terence Higgins and Matt Perrine.
Cleary will be playing just one show at the Basement; don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to see one of the greats!
