This profile focusses on Sydney based jazz guitarist Hilary Geddes .   It is based on  a detailed interview Eastside’s Mick Paddon  recorded with Hilary. They discussed her music and her musical education. They talked about her musical influences and the challenge in finding female role models among jazz guitarists. Hilary has previously been a recipient of the Jann Rutherford Award which is intended to give young female musicians assistance in establishing themselves .  So in the interview Hilary talked about the gender disparities in tertiary music courses, though she says things are changing. Her currently listening reflects her broad range of musical interests and influences. The profile of Hilary includes music from live performances by the Hilary Geddes Quartet recorded by Eastside’s Peter Nelson.  profile first aired on 89.7fm in  October  2020 as part of Mick Paddon’s weekly show Time and Space which broadcasts every Thursday from 12.00-14.00. It shortly after it first aired Hilary was awarded the  Freedman Jazz Fellowship for 2021.  The  highly prestigious Fellowship is awarded annually to musicians under 35 years old.  The intention is to give established musicians financial and other support in taking their next, significant career steps.
