James Morrison of The Morrisons band chats with Eastside’s Eric during the Wednesday Drive on the 20th of March 2019 about their upcoming show at City Recital Hall.

Sydney is not known for its fireflies – just as the Appalachian hill-country of Virginia, Kentucky and East Tennessee is not known for its picturesque sandstone harbours. But, as anyone familiar with the dun bushland quarters of the city’s hinterland knows, there are fireflies here – just as there are local pickers seized of all the spirit and fervour of those most enduring musical traditions of the American South. Sydney’s own The Morrisons are just such a band of peerless pickers: musicians possessed of ancient and unsleeping fire tempered and refined by conservatory education and grown warm and nourishing with closeness.

James shared with us that though he loves playing in a bluegrass band, he’s always dreamed of being a part of a doo-wop band. He also told us Eastsiders that they’ve got some tricks up their sleeves to make the crowd’s experience more interactive at their show on Saturday.

The Morrisons will be performing their own Man of Constant Sorrow: A Tribute to the Music of O Brother, Where Art Thou? at the City Recital Hall on Saturday 23 March 2019. The Morrisons will not only be playing songs from O Brother, Where Art Thou? but will also play a wide variety of covers of songs that inspire them as a band; it will mostly be bluegrass and folk, but will perform some blues, gospel, and early American pop covers as well.
