During the course of March and April 2018 on Arts Wednesday, Sylvia Rosenblum had a series of 6 conversations with prominent Sydney architect, Ed Lippmann, on heritage issues. In Part 1, they discuss the issues: what do you pull down, what do you keep and if you keep, how do you keep? Part 2 looks at The Rocks in 1970s and Jack Mundey’s Green Bans, which saved the 19th century terraces. In Part 3, the Cahill Expressway is the topic – a road that has been unloved since it was built and subject to many projects to pull it down ever since. In Part 4, Ed turns his attention to 20th century award winning buildings which have been demolished: the Exhibition and Convention Centre at Darling Harbour and the State Office Block in Macquarie Street. The Sirius building is the topic of Part 5 and it was discussions over the fate of this building that started the heritage discussion and Ed finished by looking at examples of how heritage issues are handled in Europe.
