Saxophonist Angela Davis Changing the Face of Jazz
Angela Davis is a Melbourne based saxophonist predominantly playing the alto. In this profile in the series Changing the Face of Jazz Angela talks about her attraction to the instrument, and how she started playing jazz. Her commitment to the music took her from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music to New York, via post graduate study at the University of Philadelphia. In New York she met some of the greats of the jazz saxophone and studied with Lee Konitz, a major influence on her style of playing. She returned to Australia to what she describes as the inspiring jazz scene of Melbourne where she recorded her most recent CD, Little Did They Know released just a couple of months ago. Angela reflects on the absence of female role models for her instrument and offers some advice for young women thinking of making a career studying and playing jazz. Before Angela introduces herself we hear her playing on Circuit for Three a track from her new CD. While she is talking we can hear two more tracks from that new CD in the background, Hymn for Haden and a piece written by Charlie Haden called Our Spanish Love Song Perhaps not surprisingly Angela ackowledges Charlie Haden as another one of her musical influences. After she has spoken we hear one more track in full, Till we Meet Again from her 2014 album Lady Luck This profile was first broadcast on July 10th 2019 during the Eastside show Time and Space introduced by Mick Paddon who has produced all the profiles in the Changing the Face of Jazz series
