Portico Quartet – Portico Quartet

Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is Portico Quartet’s self titled album.

Portico Quartet have been around since 2008 when they were nominated for the Mercury prize for their unique sound they invented performing as buskers. This is the third album from the east London genre fusers and it sees them continue to further experiment with their sound.

Portico Quartet features synthesised strings, snapping percussion, electronic patterns, ambient brass, Indian style drums and classical elements. The quartet also brought in Cornelia Dahlgren for a guest vocal appearance on the album, and her Bjork styled crooning adds a further mystery and mood to the experience.

Whilst a Jazz theme is still underlying throughout the album, it is definitely not as apparent compared to their previous releases. This LP sees the group delve deeper into their soundscape and at times could almost be mistaken for a record by The Necks. The groups’ ability to expand their horizons to offer an even more modern and contemporary feel to their music is what makes Portico Quartet so exciting.

Portico Quartet is a release distributed by The Planet Company. For more information go to www.theplanetcompany.com or check out their new facebook page.

Stay closely tuned to Eastside as we are giving away a copy of Portico Quartet to a listener every day this week!
