REGGAE LEGEND JIMMY CLIFF

Before Bob Marley, there was Jimmy Cliff – Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, two-time Grammy Award Winner and collaborator with Annie Lennox, The Rolling Stones and Tim Armstrong, just to name a few.

Jimmy Cliff is a Jamaican reggae musician, multi-instrumentalist, singer and actor. He is the only living musician to hold the Order of Merit, the highest honour that can be granted by the Jamaican government for achievements in the arts and sciences.

He was born on April’s Fool’s Day 1948 and stepped into the music industry quite early at 14 years.  The story behind his music career is even more impressive. It all started with a restaurant, called Beverly’s, which he used to walk past every day. One day he made his way inside, trying to persuade the owners to record his song ‘Dearest Beverly’ as a publicity for their business. Two of them didn’t take him seriously, but the third one, Leslie Kong saw talent in the boy and has remained his coach and producer since then.

Since then he became successfully and released songs such as ‘Vietnam’:

‘the greatest protest song ever written’ – Bob Dylan

and is well-known for the tracks ‘You Can Get It If You Really Want’ and of course, ‘Many Rivers to Cross’.

This year he’s performing his classic hits as well as his most recent album ‘Rebirth’, live at the Metro Theatre in Sydney on the 9th of April.
