Responding to Place: 17 October 19

Amanda Penrose Hart

This Arts Thursday with Maisy Stapleton explores two diverse art forms, each recording a response to place.

Un bel dí vedremo

Amanda Penrose Hart‘s new exhibition Un bel dí vedremo opened recently at the King Street Gallery on William.

Penrose Hart is an en plein-air painter – depicting the landscape while ‘in-situ’, surrounded by its forms, smells, sounds and changing nuances of light.

In this exhibition she paints familiar Australian scenes – surf, lighthouse promontories, bleached paddocks, thinly wooded bushland and distant hills; but in the past she has travelled to places where the serenity of the landscape belies its history as a battle zone – along the Western Front during WW2 – or on the slopes Gallipoli.

In our conversation with Amanda, we’ll explore what lies beneath her depiction of topography and how she brings the immediacy of the landscape to her work, along with underlying perceptions of the places she immortalises.
join me soon after 10:30 to listen in to Amanda.

Un bel dí vedremo is shown at King Street Gallery on William, 177 William Street Darlinghurst, until October 26.

A Stitch In Tile Exhibition: Tapestries of Islamic Tiles and Architectural Motifs

Tapestry may conjure up images of medieval art or grandma’s cushions, however needlepoint artist Natalie Fisher has reimagined this delicate craft, putting a modern spin on it while referencing the artistry in the tiles and architecture of magnificent mosques in Morocco, Uzbekistan, Turkey and Persia.

Applying wool as paint is applied to canvas, the striking geometric patterns and bold colouring lend itself to a modern interpretation, complementing contemporary as well as traditional furnishings.

Natalie’s dedication has seen a simple tapestry kit received on her 13th birthday burgeoning into this recent exhibition, which features works impressively totalling over 1.5 million stitches!

Join me in conversation with Natalie Fisher, after 11:00am on Arts Thursday.

The Stitch in Tile exhibition is being shown at the Persian Rug Company, 30 Gordon St Rozelle, and runs until October 18, 9am – 5pm
