Roberto Fonseca & His Quintet

Roberto-Fonseca-4-652x367 Pianist/composer Roberto Fonseca, The Buena Vista Social Club prodigy and Havana Cultura star, has grabbed Cuban music by the horns, and launched it into unexplored dimensions and sounds with his new global quintet. Touring his rave reviewed new album ‘YO”, (which means ‘I” in Spanish), this tantalising work blends traditional acoustic instruments with elements of electronica, and pays homage to Cuba’s African roots while striking forwards with red-hot grooves and electronic beats that flawlessly updates Cuba’s musical lineage. An electrifying, uninhibited live performer, when Roberto Fonseca plays, the music seeps from every pore in his body. Britain’s The Guardian said “A rousing demonstration of what can happen when a great Cuban pianist becomes obsessed with Africa. Fonseca is the finest fusion exponent in Cuba. ” Direct from headlining WOMAD and a mega world tour, Fonseca will perform with Joel Hierrezuleo on latin percussion, Ramsés Rodríguez on drums, Yandy Martinez on bass and Sekou Kouyate on kora and ngoni. With this outstanding group of musicians, and with Roberto Fonseca at the helm, it is certainly one of the live shows to catch in 2013. “The music is so svelte it is like sliding between satin sheets, with Fonseca’s ingenuity and capacity for generating beauty apparently limitless.” John Shand, SMH, review of Fonseca’s AKOKAN CD, March 2010
