Sexually Frank Creators Tell All About Love, Sex And…Toes?
In a world where the cost of living exceeds the annual salary, where millions of dollars are poured into CGI and where the same actors are running viral circuits around Hollywood, it’s nice to see that extraordinary things can be done with a nurse, a computer programmer, toe sex and some loose change. From the creators of A-Bo The Humonkey comes the patently fashioned $2000 feature that managed to out rate $1.2 million box office flick Total Recall in the Australian premiere alone.
Complete with gay pride, sex tapes, masturbation, love, jealousy, rosacea, erratic bowel movements and the joys of adolescence, Sexually Frank is an idiosyncratic tangle of thirty-somethings who come together in a vibrant synergy of engaging humour, enthralling sincerity and earnest morality that will render Hollywood counterparts speechless.
Despite battling jet lag, peak hour traffic and the inner turmoils of international connecting flights, writer, director and lead actor Frankie Frain and co-star Keith Sadeck looked astonishingly chipper as I wandered into the East Side office on Thursday. “We left Boston on Tuesday and got here this morning, it’s that weird thing where we’ve flown into the future” they mused, “but we’re happy to be here!” And went on to provide a spritely (and highly entertaining) description of monolithic excitement towards the forthcoming launch of self-produced feature Sexually Frank in the Sydney Underground Film Festival.
Frankie and Keith dived enthusiastically into the interview, going above and beyond the mundane act of question answering by delving into enthralling detail and pulling out production facts and information previously untold. They were energetic, witty, funny, entertaining and, above all, genuine. Throughout the interview I got the distinct impression that their personalities would remain unchanged regardless of whether they were chatting to their friends around the TV, or to David Letterman on The Late Show.
Not only does Frankie Frain explode out of the romantic comedy stereotype with pre-formed couples and unpredictable endings, he does it using a subset of non-actors and astonishing humility. His admiration and gratitude toward the cast is irrefutable and, if given the opportunity, will happily steer the conversation away from personal filmic triumphs to applaud the actors, friends and family members that made it possible.
