Short & Sweet People’s Choice Showcase – Thatcher vs God + 11 other plays
Short & Sweet Sydney is the world’s biggest short play festival. In 2014, 180 ten minute plays were selected for production from over 1000 scripts submitted to festival organisers. Then the 12 top plays, as voted by the audience during the eight week festival season, are remounted for the SHORT AND SWEET PEOPLE’S CHOICE SHOWCASE.
The People have spoken. Mrs Thatcher has been returned. Thatcher vs God, a razor-sharp comedy penned by long time Randwick resident Genevieve Mortiss, has won a place in the Short & Sweet People’s Choice Showcase. The play sees Maggie Thatcher locking horns with the Almighty in the afterlife as she accounts for her time in power, defending her radical transformation of Britain’s economy and her actions during the Falklands conflict. Who will win this battle? Will the Iron Lady make it through the pearly gates? Will the audience vote for Maggie to go through to the Short & Sweet Gala Final towards ultimate triumph? Thatcher vs God explores the conscience of political leaders in both war and peace, the challenges faced by women in power and the economic legacy of Britain’s most controversial Prime Minister. Directed by Debbie Smith and starring Sandra Bass as Thatcher and James Belfrage as God. Brought to you by F.A.T. Productions.
