Slide Albatross – Slide Albatross

Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is the self titled release by Slide Albatross.

Slide Albatross are a recently formed Sydneyside trio featuring Brendan Berlach on saxophone, Alex Masso on drums and David de Vries on guitar. The group was actually formed by chance. Whilst each of the musicians studied together at the Sydney Conservatorium, Slide Albatross only came to be after the three of them performed a wine bar gig in 2010 with no repertoire, completely improvised. Realising that they shared a similar musical expression, Slide Albatross was born, and this their debut album is the fruits of their work since.

Simplicity and minimalism are two of the fundamental ethics within Slide Albatross’ sound. Yet it is the trio’s attention to detail and firm grasp of their goal that gives the release a depth that can so often go unachieved when taking a minimal approach. Slide Albatross explore jazz improvisation through an ambient gentle folk sound that occasionally ventures into psychedelia. Whilst this genre fusion is not unheard of, common it is certainly not, and it is refreshing to see a local group venturing into this area with such affinity and success.

You can catch Slide Albatross at 401 Hibernian House on Wednesday 28th March, tickets are $10 on the door.
