Sounds Of Soul chronicles: Alive and Kickin’
Sydney has this strange reputation of being a hard base for black music and Soul in particular. Maybe that has been historically true but the developments of the last couple of years show a very different trend towards everything with groove and soul. Besides the established standard-bearers of across the board funkiness like Soul Of Sydney and Funktafied there are now a number of nights happening dedicated to Rare Soul played from vinyl. It’s fair to say that there is basically no weekend where you can’t venture out to have a wiggle to excellent selections on wax. Longer running nights like the Northern Soul orientated Soulsville or the 70s loving Motion, who kept the flame alive for so many years, are now completed by a string of new ones like 45 Fridays and Night Owl At The Crix to name a few. Of course this all will culminate in October when hundreds of interstate and international Soul aficionados head for Sydney to mingle with local Soulies for 4 days of Northern Soul craziness at the 18th Australian National Northern Soul Weekender. It’s truly alive and kicking, that Rare Soul thing in our town.
