Sounds Of Soul chronicles and playlist (02.05.2014): To vinyl or not to vinyl…

SkullSnapsLately a couple of well-intentioned friends questioned my total dedication to vinyl as the sole medium to play out music, be it on the airwaves or as deejay in clubs. I feel touched by my friends’ worry about potential damage done to my spinal cord and my record collection due to frequently carrying and spinning heavy wax, but rest assured that both areas of concern are in pretty good nick with a couple of more years of heavy rotation ahead. There are other reasons than the obvious workout factor for me to prefer plastic platters over a memory stick. First of all I never intended to collect records to treat them like a stamp-collection – they were always meant to be played, not looked at, and I like to share that experience. Secondly I like the slight imperfections of vinyl that make the music feel alive and original – digitalized versions of analogue recordings are by nature always alterations, consequently I think that playing it in the way the artists intended it to sound like, is the way to pay the musicians the upmost respect. Thirdly these shiny things and turntables look much better than laptop and memory stick plus there is an appealing romanticism in using wax that is impossible to arouse via digitalized media. So despite my friends advice I hauled another stack of vinyl to Eastside and picked the following for last week’s show:
