Sounds Of Soul chronicles and playlist (10.05.2013): DJ Entertainer or DJ Educator
There has been recently a flare up of the age-old discourse in the deejay community about the true purpose of spinning records, be it on the airwaves or to a live audience in a club. Simply put, you can say that there are two factions – the DJs that see themselves primarily as entertainers and the ones that first and foremost try to educate their audience. The educators accuse the entertainers of being sellout crowd-pleasers and they in reverse blame their counterparts being bores and joy-kills. I see myself as standing somewhere in the middle of this debate, trying to entertain but also to bring new sounds to listeners and dancers. As you can imagine that’s not an easy thing to pull of and you get some flack from both sides of the divide, but as long as my audience keeps tuning into the S.O.S. radio show or filling the dance-floor I can’t be that wrong. Here’s what I played in last weeks show, hopefully entertaining and educating in the same way:
