Sounds Of Soul chronicles and playlist (14.2.2014): Meet Bobby P.
It must have been in the early 2000s on my then regular visits to the 6ts allnighters in London’s famous 100club on Oxford Street that a middle-aged rather small gentleman sporting a fedora with an extra-long feather walked up to me and started a very amicable conversation whilst I was smoking in the corner of the club. I was quite baffled by this, mainly because I’ve never met this person before and also by his entourage in the form of two young, strikingly good looking ladies who towered behind him like most charming bodyguards. After a couple of minutes of small talk about things like the weather and the wellbeing of everyone in immediate vicinity my new friend asked me for a cigarette and then wandered off. I still had no clue what to make of this and the amazed looks on the faces of my friend around me, right until the same gentleman, took the stage and started singing What A Wonderful Night For Love. Finally I realized that the man who had just hit me up for a ciggy was no other than Bobby Patterson, the legendary singer, songwriter, producer, promotion man and label owner. I’ve long since then given up on cigarettes but I still have to smile whenever I put on a Bobby Patterson record, just like in last week’s radio show that contained the following:
