Sounds Of Soul chronicles and playlist: 18 January – collectors delight
It doesn’t happen very often that collecting vinyl records seams almost like a financially rewarding venture and not a compulsive disorder like most of the times. I was extremely delighted to learn this week that a little known and mostly overlooked 7”, which I nevertheless have championed over the years, did extremely well in an auction of a big record dealer. Ike Strong’s I Owe My Life To You actually sold for about ten times of what I have spend on a decade ago, making me feel for a moment like a very smart investor. But of course this is an absolute delusion, first of all because I would never sell such a nugget of a record just to cash in on it and secondly because a extreme rise in value like this is very rare and outnumbered by the many times I’ve probably paid far to much for that elusive wax. Let’s face it – collecting records is not a way to rake in the money, it’s a habit that costs money. The real return in the investment in vinyl is when you give them a spin on the turntable and that’s exactly what I did at last Fridays Sounds Of Soul radio show featuring these records:
