Sounds Of Soul chronicles and playlist (21.3.2014): Talkin’ Stax, Sly and Soul

Stax Booker T.Lately I had the great honour to interview Booker T. Jones and Larry Graham, two of the all-time greats of Black music in general and Soul ‘n’ Funk in particular, for Sounds Of Soul and Radio Eastside. Both men have been equally fascinating to chat with and I’ve got to thank them for their insightful and detailed answers. Larry Graham, famous for having invented the funky slap bass technique, bass player in Sly and the Family Stone and his own band Larry Graham Central, proofed to be a natural storyteller and shared with us freely tales from his long and eventful career. Booker T. Jones on the other hand lived up to his reputation as one of the key men behind the famous Memphis sound and bandleader of the Stax records house band Booker T. & the MG’s with a first-hand account of the early Stax days right up to his recent work with the newest generation of Soul artists. In case you missed last week’s Sounds Of Soul with Booker T. or the one before featuring Larry Graham you can listen back via our program page or by simply clicking the link below. One of the reasons for these two interviews is that both artists are soon to tour our shores, with appearances at the Byron Bay Bluesfest and in Melbourne and Sydney in April – gigs I won’t miss, that’s for sure.
