Sounds Of Soul chronicles and playlist (25.4.2014): Generation wax
On the occasion of the much celebrated international record store day two weeks ago a series of articles popped up in newspapers, magazines and on websites dealing with the curious phenomenon of record collecting. Most of these pieces had been obviously written by bewildered members of the staff normally assigned to cover everything young, hip and beautiful – a gross misjudgment because collectors of vinyl are predominately middle aged male nerds as one can see at every record fair or store. Typically the articles were illustrated with a picture of a young man, sporting ironic sunglasses and a beard of the kind Amish and residents of hipster town grow, holding a 12″ sized piece of wax in front of a record store located in Sydney’s inner west or a equivalent suburb somewhere else. Whilst there is a undeniable surge in sales of vinyl records and this may be party due to the fact that wax is hip again, I would nevertheless safely bet that the bulk of the stuff is purchased by blokes with beer bellies aged over forty. Before you call me a cynic or accuse me of being dismissive towards young music aficionados, I’d like to add that I’m well aware that it’s no wonder that older folks are raking in the shiny platters – record collecting is a rather expensive and time consuming enterprise ideal for an age when one is sufficiently cashed up, with plenty of spare time at hand. So I pay my extra respect to the young ones that DO spend their hard earned money on records – and to the ones that don’t, I’d say – you can always tune into Sounds Of Soul and have a listen how these marvelous things sound like.
