Sounds Of Soul chronicles: Northern Soul the film

Northern Soul the film 1

It’s fair to say that at the moment things are happening in this town when it comes to Northern Soul. In 2015 the Emerald City is hosting arguably the two most significant events on the Northern Soul calendar in Australia – the 18th Australian National Northern Soul Weekender from 23rd to 25th October and this Saturday’s Australian premier of the award winning movie ‘Northern Soul’. Directed by internationally renowned photographer Elaine Constantine, this film tells the story of two young Soul devotees at the heydays of this underground movement in England’s North in the 1970s. Rejected by countless distributors the UK the release of ‘Northern Soul’ the film was nevertheless a success at the box office and took the movie to the top ten, made possible by a grass roots movement of Soul fans filling local cinemas. The upcoming Sydney premier was not much different, selling out all screenings in a matter of days. There’s solace for the many who couldn’t snatch a ticket in time – there’s still the big after party/Northern Soul night at Spectrum (Oxford Street, Darlinghurst) if you fancy a taste of this unique underground dance culture, including original vinyl spun by Sydney’s top DJs. More of the same, only on a bigger scale, awaits us later in October when the National Weekender kicks off. Great times ahead indeed.
