Steve Barry Quartet at Foundry 616
Winner of the Bell Award for Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year pianist Steve Barry premiers a new suite of music for quartet on the 29th November at Foundry 616 – the fruit of the final year of his PhD in composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
Synthessing a lyrical melodicism with an affinity for labyrinthian harmony, Steve deflty balances consonance and dissonance, density and sparcity, structured composition and open-ended improvisation, while alluding to influences from classical moderism and experimental improv to post-bop and the traditional musics of India and Japan.
The music is brought to life by a quartet of award-winning composer-performers in Jeremy Rose, Max Alduca and Dave Goodman – together navigating the complex forms while setting a platform for spirited collective improvisation.
Steve maintains a busy schedule composing, teaching and performing periodically across Australasia. Runner-up in the National Jazz Awards, his albums of original music, Puzzles (2014) and the debut Steve Barry (2012), as well as the Australia-Japan collaboration Orbiturtle’s Sakura (2015), each received 4 star reviews in The Australian.

“… dazzling in his harmonic adventurousness, melodic resourcefulness, switchback rhythmic ideas and non-bombastic sense of drama” (John Shand), expect a raucous melting-pot of influences with a few re-workings of jazz standards thrown in for good measure.
