Sun Ra Arkestra

Undoubtedly one of the main attractions for this year’s Sydney Festival will be the legendary big band Sun Ra Arkestra.

Envisaged by by Alabama native Herman Poole Blount aka Sun Ra, this band has over the last 60 years remained an ever changing entity. They have changed names and lineup more than a guitar changes strings, with the fearless musical embodiment that was Sun Ra maintaining that their evolution in sound and direction should be reflected within their name.

From what has been described as ‘cosmic jazz’, his creation delved into the realms of blues, swing, bebop and more, leaving no stone unturned in his extravagant musical journey.

Fortunately, despite this legendary man’s passing in 1993 from pneumonia, the band continued under the direction of two individuals. Tenor saxophonist John Gilmore led the group for two years until his untimely death in 1995, to be succeeded by saxophone slick Marshall Allen.

Fast track almost 21 years and Marshall is still ever-present and ready to wow us at the Sydney Festival. His combination of experimental flow and raucous energy can only give you a glimpse of what is in store. One of the world’s most prominent big bands in such an intimate setting. Get in quick before they sell out!
