Clovelly Road Better Blocks Community Day
Last year a small group of forward thinking individuals put on a Better Blocks event on Clovelly Road, showing the community as well as the local council a new vision for a neglected and busy street. Last year’s event was such a success that they’ve decided to hold it again, as part of a bigger movement called Park to Pacific, a community group that formed in the aftermath of last year’s event.
This Sunday will see the second Clovelly Road Better Blocks event take place, where for one day the community can see the implementation of some of the ideas the group want to incorporate permanently into the streetscape.
This Sunday, October 19 from 11am, the corner of Clovelly Road and Fern St will have large trees installed for the day, as well as stalls, music, facepainting, kids’ art and activities. There will also be new art murals showcasing how the community can make positive improvements to their local shopping village. In addition to cycling infrastructure and increased greenery and a parklet (literally a single parking space turned into a miniature park) there will be music, permaculture displays, street art, local food and cafes.
The Better Blocks concept was started in Texas a few years back by Jason Roberts, and has rather wonderfully expanded into a global movement. The day itself will show you just what our streets and communities can be; if only we, as a community, are willing to engage and lobby our local councils and politicians. The expanded concept will be wonderful, if, when, implemented.
