Sydney Theatre Company’s School Dance is a flashback

School Dance is the new comedy from Sydney Theatre Company in association with Sydney Festival. Written by Matthew Whittet, School Dance pays homage to the classic 1980’s genre of teen flicks made famous by legendary filmmaker, John Hughes.

Exploring themes of social acceptance and self-actualisation, Hughes provided a snapshot of teen life in the mid 1980’s, the central theme suggesting if you can survive the perils of high school; anything is possible.

Hughes not only provided a voice for a generation of teens coming-of-age, showcasing what life was like; he proposed what it could be.

The scene of the play, as its name suggests is the school dance; a not so foreign “right-of-passage” many of us should be able to relate to. Whittet says the play is a nostalgic representation of his memories of being young discovering “who you are”.

With themes similar to the style of Hughes’ writing; Audiences can expect a nostalgic time warp reminiscent of what teen life was like in the mid 1980’s; A retro-mishmash of fashion, music, and humour.

School Dance is showing at the Sydney Theatre Company from 11 January to 3 February.
