The Alcohotlicks – Danaides

Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is Danaides by The Alcohotlicks.

The Alcohotlicks were recent winners of the inaugural Jazzgroove Association Recording Artist Award and are made up of some familiar faces on the Sydney Jazz scene. They are Aaron Flower and Ben Hauptmann on electric guitars and Evan Mannell on drums, a pretty unusual set up for a trio that they manage to pull off extraordinarily well.

Danaides, however, isn’t perhaps what you would at first expect from The Alcohotlicks as they shift to a more electronically influenced sound experimenting with synths, samples and patterned drums.

The result is a wild and contemporary cross pollination of jazz, 80’s electro and grunge rock. The sounds span from moody, sombre moments to retro dance grooves designed to get you moving. The sounds are heavy but not intense, muscular but don’t leave you weary. The core of the music is undoubtedly jazz, yet here are three musicians who love to perform it in their very own unique way, and that is always an incredibly refreshing experience.

Danaides is a release by Jazzgroove Records. For more information go to jazzgroove.com

Stay closely tuned to Eastside as we are giving away a copy of Danaides to a listener every-day this week!
