The Barons of Tang ‘Into The Mouths of Hungry Giants’

Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is ‘Into the Mouths of Hungry Giants’ by The Barons of Tang.

Into the Mouths of Hungry Giants is the culmination of 6 years of travel, triumph and tribulation. The first full length album release from Australian band The Barons of Tang, it is a document in experimental world music. Beautiful and brutal, it is skillful and chaotic all the while following a sonic theme that’s hard to put your finger on. True, the Barons have developed a signature sound over the years but this is the album where their full dynamics become apparent. The 7 piece outfit has an arsenal of Instruments at their disposal on this record, including accordion, banjo, bass and contra-bass clarinet, trombone and double bass.

The record reflects on the world-wide travel the band has enjoyed but also the tyranny of distance and loss. It reflects the tiny tragedies faced by traveling artists: Break ins, Break ups, break outs and break downs. Deaths and gifts wrapping, tolls and tuberculosis and maybe no ones listening or maybe you have the whole world on the edge of its seat . These are their stories, told in old and new conventions, music from the past for the future. We move through sound and light, and fall into the mouths of hungry giants.

Into the Mouths of Hungry Giants’ by The Barons of Tang is out not on Birds Robe Records.

Gracing stages all over the world, this rag-tag bunch of misfits are slowly building an empire out of gaffa tape and bitumen. Mixing Klezmer and Balkan feels with punk, bent folk music, Jazz and whatever’s lying around the kitchen, these feisty troubadours are making waves.

Through out Australia the Barons had feature performances at WOMADelaide (SA), Wide Open Spaces (NT) and shared the stage with infamous Irish folk-punk icons The Pogues on their Australian Tour. The Barons of Tang are now putting the finishing touches on their long-awaited debut album, set for release mid 2013.

Since their inception in 2007, the Barons have constantly strived to innovate their sound, with an arsenal of instruments such as bass clarinet, accordion, banjo and double bass, the band is redefining the limits of both “punk” and “world” music. They have toured relentlessly, stepping onto stages at Woodford Folk Festival (AUS), SPLORE Festival (NZ), Byron Bay Blues and Roots Festival (AUS), The Falls (AUS), WOMAD NZ and a whole bunch more! They have played alongside international artists such as Gogol Bordello, Fanfare Ciocarlia – Gypsy Kings and Queens and Besh O Drom.
