As part of the Sydney Festival, the creator of The Manganiyar Seduction, Roysten Abel, returns to Sydney to present a new play: the Kitchen.
This play is about a couple who is cooking a payasam, without any words but accompanied by twelve drummers, playing a traditional indian instrument : the Mizhavu. All this plot is a metaphor for Life in itself Roysten Abel look for the perfect balance between all the senses of spectators : he used simultaneous images, smells, sounds… And even at the end of the play, the audience is invited to share the pajamas which is actually a traditional dessert in India. The idea came into Abel’s mind four years ago now, during a journey in Turkey: “In this theatre experience we have tried to explore these various plains of cooking to understand and experience the holistic concept of cooking as a metaphor for the evolution of the soul. It did take me a while to gather the ingredients for this Kitchen before I could start to cook. Once I found the ingredients, I needed to find the resources to procure them and this is where, the Sydney Festival.”
